Weir Minerals Competition 2009
Sydney, Australia - 27 September 2009
The 2009 Weir Minerals Competition was held on 27 September 2009 at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney. The teams worked on project BATON.
The challenge this year was to design, build and prove a prototype device in a laboratory environment that uses two autonomous devices working together in services to pass a sculpture around two edges of a square.
The 2009 competition saw 17 universities take part in the competition including participants from WA, NSW, SA, VIC, QLD, NT and New Zealand.
The University of Adelaide and The University of Newcastle tied for second place and had to thrash it out in a nail-biting extra run to decide second and third places. With The University of Adelaide having a more consistently performing design and The University of Newcastle's design failing in acheiving all objectives in the crucial last run The Unviersity of Adelaide took second place to a dominate University of Western Australia team.
The University of Western Australia won with a blistering score of 0.89 seconds and a distinctive design showing a 'think outside the square' mentality. Although the University of Western Australia 'transported' the baton their device was the only one without any wheels!
